Education Ministry re-emphasises that schools will not be privatised

Accra (Greater Accra) 25 Jan. 2000

The Ministry of Education (MOE) on Monday re-emphasised that it does not intend to privatise or sell schools or convert them into limited liability companies and issue shares in them.

The Ministry said in a statement in Accra that it would be guided by the national interest and that "any recommendations, whether in favour or against de-regulating schools would be subjected to Cabinet and public discussions before implementation."

It said: "All Ghanaians should have the fullest assurance of the Ministry of Education that no recommendations have been submitted to it by the GES Council. That any decision on the issue will definitely be based on recommendations of the Council as well as the views of other stakeholders like the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS)."
