Ecowas Chiefs Of Defence Staff Call On Kufuor

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) chairman, President John Agyekum Kufuor, on Tuesday asked the ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff to resolve to ensure that the various military entities under them focused on professionalism and loyalty to their countries.

He said when the military secured the protection of their territories for Socio - economic development Africa would begin to gain the respect it deserved in the community of nations.

President Kufuor made the appeal when the ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff attending the two–day Fifth ECOWAS Defence and Security Commision meeting in Accra, paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle , Osu.

The meeting, which was under the auspices of the ECOWAS secretariat, was on the theme: “Promoting Sub–Regional Peace and Security”. It was also to handover the chairmanship of the commission to Ghana’s Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Seth Obeng.

The post automatically goes to the Chief of Defence staff of the chairman of ECOWAS. President Kufuor said the role of the Chief of Defence Staff was significant in the promotion of safety for the people in the sub–region

Therefore, they must be deeply informed of the troubled state of the sub–region. “West and Central Africa seemed to be in more trouble than the rest of the sub–regions on the continent”.
