Eastern Regional Minister Calls For Laws To Protect Children

Akropong-Akwapim (E/R), July 8, The Eastern regional minister, Ms Patience Adow, has asked district assemblies to enact bye- laws that would protect and ensure the sustainable growth of the child. The bye-laws need to have appropriate punitive measures to serve as deterrent to people who abuse the rights of children. Ms Adow made the call at the launching of the report on the state of the child in the Eastern Region, with particular focus on the Akwapim North district at the weekend at Akropong-Akwapim. She urged the assemblies to allocate substantial funds from their budget to support child-related programmes and activities. ''In this way, the district assemblies would be seen to be actively pursuing the concerns of children according to the provisions of our constitution and the United Nations convention on the rights of the child'' Ms Adow added. She appealed to chiefs and traditional authorities to modify some customary practices and traditions which have become irrelevant and harmful to the survival and development of the child.
