East Legon Rotary Club provides free medical screening to Tomefa township

The Rotary club of Accra Legon East has provided free medical screening for the people of Tomefa in the Ga South area.

The screening was the third in a row by the club for the deprived community as part of its outreach and service to humanity goals.

In all over 300 people were screened for; BMI - as a form of Nutritional assessment; hypertension; Hepatitis B viral infection, HIV, malaria and diabetes. The Rotarians also provided ear, nose and throat as well as eye examinations, family planning services, medical counseling and medication (pain relief; anti-malaria drugs and some antibiotics).

The complete health exercise also included polio vaccination, which is Rotary Internationals biggest project at the moment (earmarked for eradication). All the inhabitants except children under 2 years and pregnant women were dewormed as well.

The president of the club, Mrs. Estherlynne Osei-Bonsu said the exercise fell in line with Rotary’s service to humanity objectives. “We opted to come back to the village of Tomefa because it is really in need and for us this is about pulling our resources and expertise together to help,” she said. “The turnout was massive as it has been the last two years when we have been here.” She added that the Rotary Club of Accra Legon East last year, registered over 200 children under 18 years of age and the elderly over 60 years onto the National Health Insurance Scheme.

She was thankful to supporting partners including DanAdams Pharmaceuticals; Ghana AIDS Commission; Ghana Malaria Control Program as well as individuals from the club to make this project a success.
