EU votes 10 billion cedis for projects in the North

The European Union (EU) has voted 10 billion cedis for development projects in the Northern Region under the Phase V of the EU Micro Projects.

The projects include the construction and rehabilitation of schools, markets, abattoirs and toilets, health facilities and the provision of potable water to deprived communities.

Dr Kwaku Osafo, Project Manager of Government of Ghana/EU Micro Project Management Unit, announced these at the commissioning of a 60 million-cedi rehabilitated Kamina Barracks Primary School, near Tamale.

Under the EU Micro Project Scheme, district Assemblies and the beneficiary communities contribute a 25 per cent of the total cost of the project while the EU pays the rest.

Dr Osafo said the Northern Region, was now part of the six core regions in the country and the projects would, therefore, be spread to cover all the 13 districts in there.

He said between 1,500 and 1,800 projects would be undertaken throughout the country under the Phase V.

The Presiding Member of the Tamale Municipal Assembly (TAMA), Alhaji Yakubu Bukari said the Municipality had been allocated 1.2 billion cedis to undertake 12 projects this year.

He promised the EU that the Assembly would play its part to ensure the successful completion of all the projects.
