EU delegation on Election Observation Mission

Accra, Sept. 22, GNA - A four-member delegation from the European Union (EU) Headquarters in Brussels would arrive in Ghana on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, on an election observation mission. The group made up of two election experts and two member-state experts are visiting the country on the invitation of the Ghanaian Electoral Commission to (EU) to observe the Presidential and Parliamentary election in Ghana scheduled for 7th December 2008. "It is an essential element in the decision making process on the deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission. Its purpose is to assess the advisability, feasibility and usefulness of an EU Election Observation Mission," a statement signed by Mr Dick Naezer, on behalf of the Acting Head of Delegation Mr Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi said on Monday.

The statement said the principal part of the mission would last until 30th September and added that some of the experts would have the opportunity to explore election issues in details from the 1st to 9th October in selected regions in the country.

It said as part of the "Exploratory Mission on Election Observation", the group would meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Justice, Ministry of Defence and the Chief Justice. They would also meet with the various political parties, the National Peace Council, The Ghana Police Service and other relevant institutions while accessing the security and logistical situations in the country, the statement said.
