ECOWAS Bank Refutes Foreign Minister's Assertion

The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development has denied the purported termination of Dr. George Sipa-Adjah Yankey’s appointment as president. In a fax message to Joy FM, the office of the president of the ECOWAS bank described as false the assertion by Ghana’s foreign minister, Hackman Owusu Agyeman, that Dr. Yankey has been sacked.

The bank, however, admitted that a letter of dismissal was received in April this year but said that letter was in breach of the ECOWAS protocol and has been challenged in court; and until the substantive suit has been heard, Dr. Yankey will continue to be in office.

Dr. Yankey was among three nominees put forward by the former NDC government for the position. However, Foreign Minister, Hackman Owusu Agyemang told Joy FM that the NPP government could no longer support Dr. Yankey’s appointment because it was backing the candidacy of Dr. Ibn Chambas for the Executive Secretary position of ECOWAS.

He also said Dr. Yankey’s alleged involvement in the Quality Grain scandal and other fraudulent cases casts doubts on his integrity and therefore his suitability for international appointments.
