ECG to carry out load shedding at weekend

Accra, Feb. 11, GNA - Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) announced on Thursday that there will be a 30MW shortfall in power supply to consumers in Accra during peak time on Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, 2010.

The shortfal l, which constituted about eight per cent of the demand for Accra, was due to a planned outage on one of the three transmission lines supplying power from the main Tema switchyard to the Achimota substation. These were contained in a statement signed by Mr Albert Quainoo, Head of Public relations at GRIDCo.

It said the line was being taken out to provide a safe work environment for a contractor to replace some critical equipment at the switchyard as part of the development of the 330kV West African Power Pool Project. "GRIDCo has therefore requested Electricity Company of Ghana to manage the load between 6 p.m. and 10.p.m on Saturday and Sunday to ensure the stability and security of the national grid and to prevent the two remaining lines from overloading during the outage period." It said it was very important to carry out this work to improve service delivery to customers.
