Information reaching THE PUBLISHER indicates that, following the reckless attitude of some residents of Ashanti Region, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is bound to suffer huge operational losses in the region.
Many farmers, in an attempt to prepare their lands ahead of the planting reason, have set a lot of bush fires in several parts of the region, leading to the destruction of ECG equipment, including electric poles and pylons.
Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, the Ashanti Regional PRO of the ECG, has confirmed that hundreds of the company’s poles have been destroyed this year alone
“We have suffered several operational losses in the Ashanti region lately due to the careless nature of some farmers in the Ashanti region.
“In an attempt to burn their farms ahead of planting, several farmers have ended up burning poles of the ECG that carried our lines.
“We have suffered huge losses as a result of this at Sekyere Afram Plains and other areas in the region, including even Kumasi.
“This is among the reasons why some areas are usually plunged into darkness”, he lamented to the paper.
He disclosed that the company will be compelled to use resources meant for the expansion ECG to fix the problems caused by the farmers, and called for a change in attitude.
