The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has presented to the Supreme Court a list of voters who registered with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards.

According to Class FM’s Paa Kwesi Parker-Wilson, the election conducting body presented the list to the court registry before 2pm on Wednesday June 29, the deadline of the six-day ultimatum given by the apex court.

Background

The same court had earlier ruled that NHIS cards could not be used as proof of one’s citizenship.

The court request for the list followed a return to the apex court by plaintiff Abu Ramadan to seek clarity on the court’s May 5 ruling in an earlier case he had filed at the same court over the credibility of the 2012 register of voters.

The court on 5 May 2016 ordered the EC to delete the names of ‘NHIS voters’ from the register as well as those who were deceased and minors as part of processes to clean the register.

At the last hearing, the court also ordered the EC to develop a guideline on the specific processes and methods it plans using to carry out the deletion of such names. The case was adjourned to June 30.
