EC mourns Dr Omane Boamah and others in helicopter crash

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has joined other state institutions to mourn the loss of Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and 7 others who died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.

The Commission described Dr Omane's death as a devastating loss to the nation's democratic community.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 8, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa expressed shock and dismay at the tragedy. The crash occurred while Dr Omane Boamah and seven others were en route from Accra to Obuasi.

The Commission praised Dr Omane Boamah's contributions to the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), where he played an active role in strengthening Ghana's electoral processes. "His absence at our meetings will be deeply felt,” the statement read.

The EC extended its condolences to the President, government, bereaved families, and the people of Ghana. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Government, the bereaved families and the people of Ghana. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” the statement concluded.

The helicopter crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, when a Z9 helicopter belonging to the Ghana Armed Forces crashed into the Sikaman Brofoyedru Forest while en route to Obuasi.

It had on board the Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and the Environment, Science, and Technology Minister, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Others were: Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna; former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong; and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.

Members of the helicopter’s crew were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah

They were on a mission to attend to a programme put together by the government to combat scourging illegal mining activities in the Adansi enclave as part of a nationwide clampdown.
