#DumsorMustStop demo: New date and venue announced amid court injunction

The conveners of the #DumsorMustStop demonstration have announced a new date and venue for their protest against indiscriminate power outages in Ghana.

The demonstration, pioneered by Ghanaian actress and socialite Yvonne Nelson and two others, was initially scheduled for Friday, May 25, 2024, at the Revolution Square, directly opposite the entrance of the Jubilee House.

However, it was disapproved by the Ghana Police Service during a meeting with the Accra Regional Police Command on Wednesday, May 15, which demanded a change of venue and time.

The conveners, Selorm Dzramado, Henry Akoto, and Yvonne Nelson, have now rescheduled the protest for Saturday, June 8, 2024.

The demonstration will take place from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, starting at the entrance of the University of Ghana, Legon, where protestors will gather and march to the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout.

A podium will be set up at the roundabout for protestors to voice their concerns and submit petitions to the government regarding the extensive damage caused by these power outages to Ghanaians.

In the meantime, the Ghana Police Service is seeking a court order to prevent the protest from taking place according to the original dates announced.

A writ filed by the Service states in part, "I am finally advised and verily believe it to be true that this is just cause for this Honourable Court to exercise its jurisdiction in the interest of public order, public safety, defense, and effective policing to issue an order to prohibit or restrain the Respondents, their agents, assigns, and anyone claiming through them from holding the intended picketing or demonstration at Revolution Square opposite the Jubilee House."
