President John Mahama has stated that Africa will not settle for anything other than a legally binding agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference which opens in France today, Monday November 30.

The conference will try to craft a long-term deal to limit carbon emissions. While rich countries promised they would give $100 billion by 2020 to the Developing World back in 2009, the money has been slow in coming.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, President Mahama said Africa will make a strong case for a binding agreement this time round.

“For us in Africa, our common position has been for a binding, measurable agreement; a treaty that we all would respect and follow.

“It will be disappointing if we stepped away from it but I guess we will go into the negotiation and see what comes out of it,” he stated.
