The Energy and Mines Committee of Parliament will summon the Power Ministry before it to answer questions on the country’s energy situation following the intensification of the power crisis in the past few days.

Deputy ranking member of the committee, Edward Ennin, made this known when he spoke on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class 91.3fm Wednesday, May 18 with Prince Minkah.

“We [parliament] resumed office just yesterday and some of these issues when you are on break, it is difficult to raise, but now that we have assumed office, the committee is even meeting today to consider some bills and I think this issue will definitely pop up. … We will want to invite the ECG and the Minister to come and explain what is going on, but what is going on is still something which is not new. It still borders on the cash needed to beef up things in the power sector... Government owes ECG over GHS500million, and if they do not have this money to do certain things, these are the things that we are going to encounter”, the lawmaker said.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Grid company has announced that power supply to parts of the national capital, Accra and other regions will be cut today Wednesday, May 18, following a load management programme.

According to the state power distributor, a total of 300 megawatts will be shed.

GRIDCo said Accra is expected to shed 120 MW; Tema, 60 MW; Eastern, 30MW; Western, 50MW; Central, 20MW; and Volta, 20MW.
