Driver faces 1,047 grams cocaine charge

Accra, May 31, GNA - A driver who was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport for concealing 1,047 grams of narcotic drug suspected to be cocaine in his shoes was on Tuesday remanded in Police custody when he appeared before an Accra Regional Tribunal (High Court) charged with possessing narcotic drug without lawful authority. Henry Nkrumah, whose plea was not taken, would reappear on June 14. Ruling on a request for bail for the accused, Mr Justice Frank Mainoo, who presided over the Court, said bail for Nkrumah was pre-mature and, therefore, refused the request.

Mr Fred Boamah from the Attorney - General's Department told the Court that the accused is a Ghanaian based in the United States of America.

Mr Boamah said Nkrumah went to the airport to board a plane for Holland and while going through departure formalities security officers suspected him because of his demeanour. He said a search conducted on the accused person's pair of black shoes uncovered 1,047 grams of powdered substance. The substance was sent to the Food and Drugs Board for examination and it was found to be cocaine.
