Driver charged with carelessness remanded in custody

Accra, April 17, GNA - Teye Ocansey, a driver, whose carelessness allegedly resulted in the death of five persons during an accident on the Korle Bu road last year, was on Monday remanded in prison custody by an Accra Circuit Tribunal.

Several people were also injured in the accident. Ocansey was charged with 16 counts of careless driving, negligently causing harm and failing to stop at a traffic light and carrying more passengers than allowed.

He pleaded not guilty. Presenting the facts before the tribunal, Chief Inspector Florence Addy said Ocansey, who was driving a Nissan Vanette commercial vehicle from Korle-Bu towards Agbogboloshie, jumped the red traffic light and in the process collided with a cargo truck.

Chief Inspector Addy said the vehicle somersaulted and finally landed on the street with all the passengers sustaining various degrees of injuries. She said the passengers were rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where five persons died and the others were treated and discharged.

The tribunal, presided over by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah, adjourned the case to April 25.
