Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has strongly defended Dr Mahamudu Bawumia against accusations that he was responsible for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during Dr Bawumia’s Ashanti Region tour to seek support for his flagbearer bid, Professor Nyarko argued that it is illogical to blame the defeat solely on Bawumia, especially given the significant losses the party suffered in parliamentary seats.

Professor Nyarko questioned the basis of such criticism, “I don’t really understand when I hear people blame the NPP’s 2024 loss on Dr Bawumia. What if we had won? What would those people say? Wouldn’t these same people be crediting themselves if the party had won? Were they not part of the campaign? Why blame it on Dr Bawumia?”

He emphasised the importance of collective responsibility, stating that both victory and defeat should be shared, not placed on one individual.

He also pointed to the reduction in NPP parliamentary seats as evidence that the blame should not fall solely on Dr Bawumia.

“Before the elections, we had 138 parliamentarians across the 276 constituencies in Ghana. If we had won more seats or maintained the 138 seats and Dr Bawumia had still lost, then I would side with those blaming him. But now the 138 has reduced to 87. Why do you argue that Dr Bawumia is the cause of our defeat? It doesn’t make sense. If our majority in Parliament dropped to 87, yet one man still managed to secure almost 42 percent, why do you blame him? It doesn’t make sense,” Professor Nyarko explained.

Professor Nyarko further stated that “God doesn’t make mistakes,” affirming his belief in Dr. Bawumia and pledging his full support until he attains leadership.

He declared his backing for Dr Bawumia’s flagbearer bid, expressing confidence in his success and vowing to stand firmly by him:

“Dr Bawumia, we are behind you. I, Kingsley Nyarko, am by your side and will support you until your leadership. I know God will surely honor Dr Bawumia.”

He concluded by urging party members to unite behind Dr Bawumia, stressing the need for loyalty and discipline within the party:

“Dr Bawumia will remain our flagbearer into the 2028 elections. Let us support our party in good faith. It is not normal to speak against our own party in a negative manner; anyone who does that is not a good party member.”
