Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared that he owes the party a duty to secure victory in the 2028 general elections.

Addressing sympathisers of his party after filing his nomination forms at the NPP Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Dr Bawumia urged delegates to retain him as the party’s presidential candidate, stressing that he embodies the values needed to lead both the NPP and Ghana.

“The NPP and Ghana are demanding for a leader who embodies the values of this tradition; deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresight and resilience.

“As the NPP is looking for a leader who embodies the character of this party’s tradition and the values of our forebearers, I, Mahamudu Bawumia, offer myself to lead the party for the 2028 elections because I have the integrity, competence, compassion, humility and the values not only required to lead this party but to lead this country," he remarked.

The former vice pesident described the upcoming January 31 presidential primary as an election “not only for the flagbearer of our party, but for the soul of this party.”

He added, “The choice we make on January 31 will determine whether or not this party will hold on to the values that make us great or become a new party focused on deepening the chasm between the rich and the poor.”

Dr Bawumia reminded supporters that he has been the party’s running mate on four occasions, served eight years as Vice President of Ghana, and contested as flagbearer in 2024.

A sea of supporters, party faithful, and leading stalwarts of the party thronged the NPP Headquarters to cheer him on, with chants and placards filling the air.

The moment capped weeks of momentum after more than 490 NPP youth organisers nationwide picked up nomination forms on his behalf earlier this month, in what was described as a symbolic show of unity and grassroots backing.

Dr Bawumia’s move comes as the flagbearer race continues to gather steam.

A recent survey by Global Info Analytics placed him in a commanding lead with 52 percent, well ahead of Kennedy Agyapong at 17 percent and Bryan Acheampong at 2 percent.

The findings further suggested that Bawumia is leading in key regions, including the Central Region, considered the political stronghold of his closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong.

Nominations for the flagbearer slot, which opened on July 29, 2025, will close on August 28, 2025.

The much-anticipated primaries are scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, when party delegates from across the country will decide who leads the NPP into the next general election.
