President John Mahama says the doomsayers who are predicting mayhem after the Supreme Court pronounces verdict on the election petition will be proven wrong.
“I am an unrepentant optimist and I don’t believe that the doomsayers are right,” Mr. Mahama told a group of presidential candidates who contested him in the 2012 general polls.
They include Flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Hassan Ayariga, the Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) Dr. Abu Sakara Forster, Independent Candidate, Jacob Osei Yeboah, Great Consolidated People’s Party’s (GCPP) Dr. Henry Lartey and the United Front Party’s (UFP) Akwasi Addai, popularly known as Odike.
The 2012 Flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom was the only one absent.
The group of failed flagbearers met the president at his residence in Accra after paying a similar call on the main opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2012 Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo earlier in the day.
They implored the two gentlemen to commit to peace after the Supreme Court delivers its judgment on the election petition case on August 29.
Mr. Mahama told the former flagbearers that: “I believe that this country’s democracy has come so far and it is strong and I believe that Ghana’s democracy will survive the Supreme Court verdict”.
“I don’t believe that there will be any major disturbance of the peace, but as president I have asked the security services to prepare a contingency plan so that if there are any cases of disturbance they could be quickly brought under control,” he assured.
