Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong

The Christian Council of Ghana has asked politicians not to play politics with the flood and fire disasters that have hit the nation.

“As we mourn the lives that have been lost in this disaster, we ask our politicians not to score cheap political points with the tragedy that has befallen the nation, instead, they should support national efforts at supporting the victims and their families to overcome their current predicaments,” the Council said in a statement signed by its general secretary Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong on Wednesday’s disaster.

The Council is also asking its member churches to rally their members to offer support for the victims and their families.

About 150 people have been confirmed dead following an explosion at a GOIL fuel station after several hours of a heavy downpour which also flooded the capital, Accra.

Below are details of the statement released by the Christian Council

FIRE, FLOOD DISASTER; LET’S UNITE TO SUPPORT VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES

The Christian Council of Ghana is calling on Ghanaians to unite and support victims and familiesthat were affected by last Wednesday’s fire explosion and flood which claimed over 150 livesand rendered many homeless and jobless in Accra.

The Council is asking its member churches to rally their members to offer support in the form ofdonation of blood, cloths and other useful materials to the affected victims and their familieswithin the city. Pastors are encouraged to offer emotional support and counselling to thevictims and affected families.

As we mourn the lives that have been lost in this disaster, we ask our politicians not to scorecheap political points with the tragedy that has befallen the nation, instead, they should support national efforts at supporting the victims and their families to overcome their current predicaments.

We also urge our city authorities to take immediate concrete steps to address the perennial flooding we see in the country annually.

The Ministry of Health and the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) should quickly put in place measures to avoid any cholera outbreak in the wake of the torrential rainfalls we are experiencing.

We encourage everyone with Isaiah 41:10 which reads, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
