First lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has advised Ghanaians to cease the habit of mocking and ostracisation of persons and couples they perceive to be infertile.

Rather, she wants them to have a change of mind-set and help fight against stigmatization.

Speaking at the opening of the Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary Annual Conference in Accra Tuesday, Mrs Akufo-Addo said it is everyone’s responsibility to empower infertile couples, influence national policies on fertility and build fertility care capacity in Africa and developing countries.

“Together we can make a difference, by building health care capacity, improving access to equitable health solutions and breaking the stigma of infertility in Africa and Asia,” she said.

She charged other First Ladies to continue to be part of the movement to address infertility in Africa.

“This is a movement of empathy, respect, empowerment and recognition. I and my sister First Ladies are truly proud to be part of this movement” she said.

The Merck Foundation conference, which is the 6th edition, is being attended by about 10 first ladies from across Africa and over 1,000 government officials, health experts among other dignitaries.

The Merck Africa Asia Luminary is gradually becoming an important event on the global scientific calendar.

For five years, the Merck luminary has provided the platform for brilliant, engaging scientific discussions that have raised awareness and collaboration around diabetes, fertility, oncology and other health issues.
