The first female head of the Political Science department of the University of Ghana Dr. Maame Gyekye-Jandoh has advised married couples not to undermine their marriages with their careers.

According to her, even though it is difficult combining her tight academic schedule with her duties as a wife, she does not compromise on her marriage.

“It’s not easy combining my marriage with my career. I try to balance family and work very well. Marriage is a blessing from God and one must pay attention to it even in the face of career. Balance is key,” she told Francis Abban on Morning Starr Tuesday.

Commenting on her historic elevation as the first woman to head the male-dominated department of the university, Dr. Gyekye-Jando said she feels comfortable because her views are respected by her colleagues.

“Working at the Political Science Dept, I knew I will one day become an HOD of the department. I didn’t know it will become historic. For the past 7 years, I have been the only female lecturer at the department until recently when we employed another female lecturer. She joined us this year.

“I can’t recall any history of discrimination at all. In terms of decision making, my views have been taken into account but certain drastic changes may have taken place if we had more women”.

On the construction of a national cathedral by the state, the university lecturer said the move is laudable so long as the taxpayer will not foot the bill.
