Don’t allow selfish people to exploit your grievances - Speaker to Labour

Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe-Adjaho, has asked the striking doctors and other agitating unions not to allow their genuine grievances to be hijacked by selfish people, to prosecute their self-serving agenda.

Doe-Adjaho told a parade of workers at the May Day celebration at Akatsi in the Volta region, on Wednesday May 1, 2013; that: “Do not allow your genuine demands to be exploited by people for their selfish interest”.

Almost 3,000 public sector doctors have been on strike for almost four weeks.

Pharmacists at Government Hospitals have also been on strike for the same period.

Nurses have also threatened a strike.

Similarly, the Ashanti regional branch of the Polytechnic Teachers Association, is also on the labour warpath.

They are all demanding the payment of allowances which have been in arrears since last year.

Mr. Doe-Adjaho has, however, appealed to them to balance their interests with that of the nation and its security.

He said: “While conceding that the Lord Himself stated that the Labourer deserves his wages, I’ll urge you all to balance the current labour agitations, on one hand, with the national interest and the security of the state on the other, so as to keep our economy on a sustainable path of growth and development”.
