A national address by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, on, June 25, 2025, alleging injustice perpetrated against her by a five-member committee investigating petitions for her removal from office has sparked widespread conversation on social media, particularly on X.

Notable among the conversations sparked online is the case of Ama Governor, a socialite who was denied her call to the Ghana Bar in both 2022 and 2023 despite successful completion of her law program due to a petition alleging misconduct against her.

A committee was set up by the General Legal Council to investigate the petition against Ama Governor, who was at the time an applicant-in-waiting to be called to the bar.

The council after consideration of the report, resolved to permit her to fill out appropriate forms for application to be called to Bar in October/November 2023.

The Council said it was then observing and monitoring her activities before considering her application.

The General Legal Council ultimately declined the application of Ama Governor to be called to the Bar through a statement.

The development at the time, sparked widespread outcry, with the Court of Public Opinion having their say, especially on social media.

In light of this, netizens have taunted Justice Torkornoo for having presided over the very system she now accuses of treating her unfairly during her trial.

Netizens argued that Chief Justice Torkornoo, as head of the judiciary, delayed Ama Governor’s legal career over what they describe as a “frivolous complaint.”
They have questioned her moral authority to decry injustice after her silence during similar treatments under the very system she once presided over.

Some have expressed sympathy for Ama Governor, suggesting that she may have gone through a difficult time watching her colleagues get called to the Bar while she remained sidelined.

It is worth noting, however, that Ama Governor was finally called to the Bar in 2024, two years after her colleagues.
