Do not impose courses on wards, parents told

Kumasi, May 21, GNA - Parents have been advised to desist from imposing courses on their wards just because of their popularity and the prestige.

Alhaji Othman Yahya, Chairman of the T.A. Ahmadiyya Secondary School (AMASS) Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in Kumasi, called for an end to practice since that had led to the failure of many children in their academic pursuit.

Alhaji Yahya speaking at a general meeting of the PTA in Kumasi on Saturday said parents should rather play the role of counsellors in the selection of courses for their wards. He also urged parents not to discriminate on basis of gender but to encourage their children in school irrespective their sex.

Alhaji Yahya said that the PTA has started constructing a three-storey dormitory block estimated at 600 million cedis for female students adding that 350 million cedis have been spent on the project.

Mr Osei Mensah, Assistant Headmaster of the school, observed that discipline and academic performance was gradually changing since the girl-students now perform better than the boys while the female students keep to school regulations than their male counterparts.
