District Level Elections in Greater Accra begin

Accra, Dec. 30, GNA - District Level Elections in the Greater Accra Region began at 0700 hours on Thursday in a number of polling stations but without the characteristic long queues of voters when the Ghana News Agency visited. The elections are being held in nine out of the 15 districts on due to delays in the printing of the ballot papers.

The Nine districts are: Ayawaso, Adenta, Osu-Clottey, Tema, Ga East, Kpeshie, Ashiedu Keteke, Ga South, and Ga West. Voting in the other five districts; Dangme West, Okaikwei, Ashaiman, Ablekuma, Ledzokuku-Krowor and Dangme East has been fixed tentatively for Friday, December 31. At the Salem Senior Secondary School Polling Station of the Ringway Electoral Area of Osu-Clottey Constituency not a single voter had turned ou= t to vote at 0700 hours even though the Presiding Officer Abdul-Razak Dery ha= d set up and was ready.

Mr Dery said he had received all the election materials for both the Assembly and Unit Committee Elections, adding that three people 96 Erasmus Odartey Xerton; Justice Amalai Tetteh and Emmanuel Leeti Lartey - were contesting for the assembly seat. He said he was expecting some of the 1,410 registered voters in the voters register to turn out during the course of voting, 93it is too early= , they will come later", he asserted. At the Christ The King Polling Station of the Lakoo Electoral Area of Dade-Kotupon Constituency, where Madam Christiana Nkansah and Bashiru Maham= a are contesting for the assembly seat, the Presiding Officer had not reporte= d by 0750 hours, when GNA visited, even though Officers of the Electoral Commission had deposited the election materials in the care of one of the Election Assistants, Mr Reynolds Amoah-Gyermi at 0630 hours. The representatives of the two contestants as well as the security personnel were present but there was not a single voter.

At Flagstaff House Junior Secondary School Polling Station of the Kanda Electoral Area of East Ayawaso Constituency, Mr Edmund Adom, Presidin= g Officer, said he was waiting for Officers of the Electoral Commission to deliver the election materials, when the GNA visited at 0740 hours. The Greater Accra Regional Directorate of the Electoral Commission rescheduled the Unit Committee and District Assembly Elections in the Regio= n for Thursday 30th December, instead of Wednesday 29th December. A press release issued and signed by the Regional Director, Mr Muhamme= d Adoquaye, said the 93Directorate has taken this decision because ballot papers for all Districts in the Region could not be delivered on Tuesday as scheduled". 3
