Ghanaians interested in training in the journalism profession will have an opportunity to study at no cost with the introduction of a ‘free for all’ universal broadcast university by a not-for-profit super elite organization; Distinguished Scholars of Africa (DISTINSA).

The ‘free’ journalism university will be an online and on-air educational institution, accessible to the populace via radio, television and online.

According to the president of DISTINSA, Dr. Nana Oppong, the university, which is the first of its kind, will provide persons who lack funding and yet are interested in championing the good course of investigating and reporting on pertinent issues in the country, the opportunity to acquire the requisite knowledge to realise that dream.

”We believe that increasing journalists’ access to university and enabling them to have excellent knowledge without having to pay for it will increase the capacity of journalists to deliver informed technically correct and best reporting”, he said.

Dr. Oppong noted that the university will be indigenized, in order to avoid any form of inequality. This, he explained, will serve the university’s vision of offering education to all.

“It is going to be a normal university but accessible to different languages for those who do not speak English. If you do not speak English but other languages, we will make sure it is that particular language. We will make sure that it is indigenized and customized so that it is relevant”, he elaborated.

He also added that the university will be funded by the government, NGOs and benevolent individuals.

The universal broadcast university is projected to start operations in March 2018.

Distinguished Scholars of Africa (DISTINSA) is a non-profit super elite organization whose prime objective among other things is to lead, educate and assist Africans and African leaders towards sustainable and healthy development in freedom and dignity.
