The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that diasporans who plan to travel to Ghana for the upcoming Diaspora Summit will be able to do so without visas.

Speaking at the launch of the summit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ablakwa explained that the government wants to encourage participation and ensure that Ghanaians in the diaspora feel welcomed.

“For the 2025 Diaspora Summit to succeed, we at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have decided that all our brothers and sisters who indicate they are travelling to Ghana to attend the Diaspora Summit will not be required to apply for visas.

“They will travel to Ghana visa-free, because we take the view, as management of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that you cannot be saying that your brothers and sisters should come home to you and then treat them as you treat foreigners. If you subject them to the same visa regime and the same payments, then they are not your family,” he said.

Ablakwa mentioned that the move is an effort to remove obstacles that prevent members of the diaspora from playing role in Ghana’s development.

“The Diaspora Summit is about building bridges and strengthening ties between Ghana and its global community. We want our brothers and sisters abroad to feel at home when they return, and eliminating visa requirements for the summit is one of the ways to make that possible,” he added.

The Diaspora Summit 2025 is scheduled for December 19 and 20 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

It is expected to bring entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, cultural leaders, and other influential personalities from around the world.

The summit is expected to cover areas such as investment, innovation, cultural exchange, and ways of deepening Ghana’s relationship with its diaspora community.
