Decentralise management of Korle Bu – Fmr CEO

Professor Afua Hesse Professor Afua Hesse

A former Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has suggested that the management of the facility should be decentralized.

According to Professor Afua Hesse, this would significantly help in dealing with the current challenges confronting the country’s premier and biggest health unit.

“I think that the size of the institution needs to be looked at, I don’t agree that doctors don’t make the best managers, I don’t agree with that because if you don’t have intimate knowledge of how a clinical service works, then it would be very difficult to run an institution like the hospital.

“Maybe a bit more decentralization might be the way to go,” Prof. Hesse told host of Morning Starr Nii Arday Clegg Tuesday.

The Board of the Korle Bu Teaching hospital is currently in a standoff with the senior staff of the facility over calls for the dismissal of the CEO, Dr. Gilbert Buckle.

The senior staff have threatened mass protest if the CEO is not sacked for allegedly mismanaging the nation’s premier hospital.

The board of the hospital has jumped to the defense of the CEO and turned down their request.

Professor Hesse who faced similar agitations during her time as CEO said this trend could cripple the facility sooner if not dealt with.

“I think what is happening is very unfortunate, I mean we have a premier hospital and the biggest in West Africa but maybe it is because of how big it is that these kind of situation happen, I think it is unfortunate”.
