Daughter of Victor Selormey opens up about her dad’s ordeal

Daughter of late Deputy Minister of Finance Victor Selormey has opened up about the incarceration and eventual death of her late father describing the imprisonment of her daddy as a bitter experience instigated by the NPP government to further their political gain.

Mr. Selormey's health deteriorated at the Nsawam Prisons where he had been serving a prison term and although he was sent to the Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital he died.

The kufour Government on March 3 remitted the remainder of Mr. Selormey’s sentence to commemorate the 48th anniversary of Ghana's independence.

An Accra Fast Track High Court presided over by Mr. Justice Dixon Kwame Afreh on April 28, 2003 sentenced Mr. Peprah and two former top public officials to various terms of imprisonment for their involvement in the Quality Grain Company case which led to a charge of willfully causing financial loss of 20 million dollars to the State to be slapped on the 3 officials.

The co-host of Viasat 1’s breakfast show ‘This Morning’ said: “it hurts when you think about the things they put him through and what is happening now, but one cannot dwell on the bitter experience always, I’ve moved on” she added.

According to the mother of three, her father was more of a technocrat than a politician who worked hard for the state adding she’s learned that for one to become a politician, they fellow must develop a thick skin.

She said although in life ‘one can never say never’, she has no plans of becoming a politician stressing that she could contribute her quota to the nation’s development in other ways. She however added that any government which invested seriously in the agric sector would enjoy support from the people as that is one sector which has the potential of transforming the living standard of Ghanaians.

On how she became a co-host of the show with Patrice Amegashie, Kokui Selormey said she was working as a co-host of the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle when she got a call from Anita Erskine inviting her for a screen test for a new show coming up after which she got the job adding although she never knew Patrice from Adam, they clicked immediately leading to the telepathy viewers witness on screen.

Kokui singled out Samens and Bernard Avle of Citi FM as being people who truly boosted her confidence and taught her the inner workings of the trade.

Mrs. Kokui Hanson explained her husband, Michael has been her pillar of strength stressing his jovial, lovable nature endeared him to her leading to marriage and production of three children indicating that although its tough juggling roles as a daughter, wife, mum and presenter and the support from her husband and mother has enabled her report to work at 5 am, start production meetings by 9:30 as well as attend to other official duties as a producer of the show within the day.

When asked how her hubby deals with fans who invade their privacy, the presenter cum opera singer stated, as a guest on eTV's Afia Schwarzenegger Show, that although Mr. Hanson gets jealous at times she quickly repels such fears with love and care such that all is well with her family.

The Christ the King parishioner disclosed that because of her fear of ‘nannies doing funny things at her home’ she does her shopping herself and performs duties of a wife without sweat.

The Ghana Television Award recipient and RTP Outstanding Television Morning Show co-host indicated that although the TV industry has transformed, it still has some way to go before becoming one that can adequately reward practitioners stressing that certain individuals still treat practitioners as if they are doing them a favour when they engage them for shows or events.

She said to counter such threats; there is a need for unions to be formed to safeguard the interest of presenters, camera men, actors/actresses, producers and other stakeholders.

The beautiful and plump host noted that it will be 10 years since her dad’s passing in April 2015 and when asked if he would have been proud of how his little girl has matured, the Holy Child Secondary School, Spelman College and the New England Conservatory alumnus said her dad would have been proud of her because she is fulfilling her dad's wish to be a tenacious goal getter although her mum would have wished she was a lawyer.

Her advice to the youth is for them not to be in a hurry to become rich but rather find a skill which would make them fulfilled without depending on anyone to define them, adding, patience and being authentic were the keys to possess in advancing oneself.
