Data Protection Commission to collaborate with Smart Africa on development of AI strategies

Smart Africa, a leading pan-African initiative committed to accelerating digital transformation across the continent, paid a courtesy call to the Data Protection Commission (DPC) to congratulate the newly appointed Executive Director, Dr Arnold Kavaarpuo.

The visit marked a significant step in strengthening the already existing relationship between the two organizations and fostering collaboration on key data protection and privacy issues across Africa.

Led by Didier Nkurikiyinkura, the Smart Africa delegation engaged in productive and insightful discussions with Dr Kavaarpuo and the DPC team.

The meeting focused on the growing need for a robust digital trust environment that benefits all stakeholders in the digital ecosystem.

Key topics discussed included potential collaborations on data portability, review of the Data Protection Act, and capacity building.

These discussions are aligned with the shared goal of supporting a harmonized digital regulatory environment on the continent.

In his remarks, Dr Kavaarpuo expressed DPC’s readiness to move these conversations into actionable steps, with the ultimate aim of contributing to the creation of a single data market for Africa, enabling the continent to leverage its collective potential and speak with one voice.

Smart Africa looks forward to continuing its engagement with the DPC and other key stakeholders in advancing Africa’s digital transformation agenda.
