DStv services still operational despite Sam George’s shutdown threat

Ghana’s DStv services remain fully operational on Sunday, September 7, 2025, despite a bold deadline from Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, to shut it down by September 6 if MultiChoice Ghana failed to agree to a 30% price reduction.

This came after a series of back-and-forth between the service provider and the minister in July 2025.

The saga reignited after Sam George announced on September 5 that MultiChoice had agreed to cut subscription costs, only for the company to release a statement denying any such agreement and reaffirming continued engagements through a stakeholder committee.

MultiChoice vs Sam George: The tough stances and the bold, cheeky responses

Sam George also responded with fierce language, accusing the company of disrespect toward Ghanaians and warning that the National Communications Authority (NCA) would carry out a shutdown by September 6 if negotiations stalled.

Despite the standoff, checks by GhanaWeb confirm that DStv remains fully accessible as of September 7. Any sporadic service disruptions appear to stem from routine technical issues, not a regulatory shutdown.

While no statement has been released by either Sam George or MultiChoice Ghana thereafter, some Ghanaians are assuming that this indicates that negotiations are still underway between the minister and the company regarding a price reduction.

In July 2025, Sam George proposed a 30% price reduction in the prices of DStv packages, citing the cedi appreciation as a factor.

However, Multichoice Ghana claimed the economic conditions were not appealing enough for a price reduction, infuriating Sam George who imposed a 30-day ultimatum in July 2025, which eventually was supposed to end on September 6.
