DFR engages 150 workers to construct a 3.5 kilometre road

Nankese (ER), May 09, GNA - The Department of Feeder Roads has engaged 150 workers mostly women, to construct a 3.5 kilometre road from Supreso to Obommofodensua in the Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District, using labour based technology.

This came to light, when Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Eastern Region Minister, inspected the progress of work on the project at the weekend. He told news men that the programme was aimed at job creating and boosting the local economy to reduce poverty. Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said government was committed to re-introducing the labour based technology in the construction, which brought the department of feeder roads a lot of recognition in the late 80s and early 90s. He said the construction of feeder roads was very dear to the government, which would help reduce post harvest loses of agricultural produce.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo observed that the challenge of creating a decent and productive opportunities for young people had become very critical. He said the large numbers of school- leavers should not be led on a path to unemployment and poverty.

"There is the need to expand job opportunities to everyone through public and private development initiatives". Mr Acquah Mensah, site engineer of the Department of Feeder Roads, said the project in the Eastern Region was a pilot one, adding that, the project is in its third week.

Among the workers is an 80-year-old woman, Madam Efua Esimeniwaa, who advised the youth to embrace hard work to be able to earn a decent living. 09 May 10
