The Graphic reports on its front page that a combined team of personnel from the Bank of Ghana (BOG) and policemen yesterday barred the premises of four non-banking financial institutions in Accra for breach of the non-bank financial institutions law. Under the heading: "BOG gets tough with non-banking institutions", the Graphic says the four are among over 50 such institutions suspected to be involved in illegal transactions such as inward and outward transfers of foreign exchange and deposit taking. The affected companies whose offices were barricaded are: Big Value, Gold Coast Travels and Forex Bureau Limited, Telecash and First African Financial Services. GRI

"Speaker warns Electoral Commission", is the headline of another front page story in the Graphic which says the Speaker of Parliament has asked the Electoral Commission to put its house in order and take Parliament serious. The Graphic says the Speaker, Mr. Justice Daniel Francis Annan was commenting on the Commission's request to withdraw the Constitutional Instrument on Unit Committee elections from the House at its sitting yesterday. The Constitutional Instrument placed before the House last July, sets out the modalities of unit committee elections throughout the country. The elections had earlier been suspended because of a court injunction. GRI

The Graphic reports on its back page that the Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched a Teacher Redeployment Exercise under which 7,216 classroom teachers believed to be inappropriately placed would be transferred to fill vacancies in schools in rural and semi-urban areas. The measure follows a recent manpower survey conducted by the Service which revealed that there are 6,949 teachers in basic schools on pay- rolls who are not at post. Dr. Christina Amoako-Nuama, Minister of Education who disclosed this to the Graphic said the survey indicated that there is laxity in the application of applied norms to determine staff quotas for schools and regional/district education offices.
