Creation of New Districts: Minority demands withdrawal of LI over defects

The Minority argues that the LI must be taken back to the Local Government Ministry for corrections The Minority argues that the LI must be taken back to the Local Government Ministry for corrections

The minority in Parliament is demanding the withdrawal of a legislative instrument creating and realigning Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies from Parliament.

Government is seeking to create 38 new districts and municipalities upon the maturity of the LI.

The Minority argues that the LI which was laid in Parliament last week has to be taken back to the Local Government Ministry for corrections of a number of defects hence the demand.

It was the above message that the Minority wanted to put out which resulted in a standoff with the Speaker leading to suspension of sitting for an hour.

Prof Mike Oquaye failed to recognize the Minority leadership after standing for a while.

Speaking after a meeting with the speaker to resolve the impasse during suspension, Deputy Minority Chief Whip Ahmed Ibrahim said the LI must be withdrawn and relaid after the corrections are made.

In a reaction, the Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the claim by the minority will be looked into.

Speaker Prof. Mike Oquaye cautioned the minority against springing surprises like the one that resulted in the standoff.
