The Nuclear Regulatory Authority(NRA), has warned the public encroaching on the lands of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission(GAEC) to vacate the area, insisting that the continuous stay on those lands poses great danger to their health.

Resident staff of GAEC, with training in safety and security on nuclear accident reside about 1 km away from the centre which houses a reactor.

However, some persons regardless of the risk of exposing themselves to the radiation emitted from the facility have built homes less than 50 metres from the reactor.

The Director General of the NRA, Prof Geoffrey Emi-Reynolds wants the government to pay off encroachers to create a buffer zone around the facility.

GAEC has said encroachment on its lands by squatters and real estate developers poses threat to its installations.

GAEC is located North-West of the University of Ghana. It is about 24 km from Central Accra and 6 km off the Legon-Madina road towards Kwabenya through Haatso township.
