Court remands trader for harming nursing mother

A Nigerian trader, Gloria Emmanuel who is accused of pouring hot water on a nursing mother and another during a quarrel on Thursday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Charged with causing unlawful harm, Gloria 22 has pleaded guilty.

The Court presided over by Ms Ellen Vivian Amoah, remanded Gloria into police custody and deferred her sentence to June 15.

The nursing mother Chinemerem Chukwudinka Obienyema is said to have suffered severe burns on her breast and her back as a result of the act.

Justina Chukwudinka, the mother of Chinemerem suffered burns on various parts of her body.

Prosecuting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Moses Atibillah said the complainants Chinemerem is a student.

According to ACP Atibillah both complainants and the accused person reside at Broadcasting, a suburb of Bortianor in Accra.

The prosecutor told the Court that, the complainants and Gloria have been living in the same house for about two years.

Prosecution said Chinemerem gave birth in April this year and her mother, Justina visited her to take care of her baby.

According to ACP Atibillah, there has been series of quarrels between Chinemerem and Gloria in the house.

On May 20, Gloria’s husband put off the lights in the house without notifying Chinemerem, so she (Chinemerem) pleaded with Gloria’s husband to put on the lights to enable her take care of her baby but he failed.

The prosecutor said Chinemerem and her mother Justina called Gloria to find out from her the sudden change of behavior towards them. This generated into a fight between Gloria and the complainants.

The following day, ACP Atibillah said Gloria rained insults on the complainant to wit: “mad people among others”. The complainants confronted Gloria and that also generated into a fight.

During the fight, prosecution said Gloria brought some hot water on fire and poured on the complainants who suffered various burns on their bodies.

ACP Atibillah said a report was made to the Police and Gloria was apprehended by the Police. During interrogation, Gloria admitted pouring hot water on them.
