Court orders the arrest of four people

Accra Sept.5, GNA - An Accra Circuit Court on Friday ordered the arrest of four persons, who allegedly defrauded a company of 82 million cedis after issuing dud cheques.

Richard Frimpong, a businessman, Kweku Blankson and Ama Nyarko, both traders and Joseph Sakyi, a driver, who are charged with conspiracy and defrauding by false pretences failed to appear in court when the case was called.

The accused had earlier appeared before the court and were granted bail.

The Prosecution told the court that the complainant is the proprietor of Universal Marketing Company, dealers in cooking utensils. It said on November 30, last year, Frimpong and Blankson started an office at Dzorwulu to commence business but the business flopped. Blankson and an accomplice now at large approached the complainant and introduced themselves as Director and an Accountant, respectively, of Mampkas Construction Company, who needed some cooking utensils for their workers.

The Prosecution said they bargained to buy 82 million cedis worth of cooking utensils. To convince the complainant, they took him to their well-furnished office at Dzorwulu.

The complainant supplied them with 530 boxes of cooking utensils valued at 82 million cedis.

The Prosecution said Blankson and his accomplice convinced the complainant to accept a cheque for 148 million cedis as collateral with the promise of paying the 82 million cedis the next day.

According to the Prosecution the two failed to honour their promise and the complainant, therefore, proceeded to their office but found out that the office had been deserted.

When the complainant rushed to the house in which he sent the utensils earlier, he realised that the utensils had been cleared. The Prosecution said the complainant presented the cheque to the bank but it was dishonoured. The complainant, therefore, lodged a complaint with the Police.

Police investigations into the case revealed that after the utensils were deposited at the house at Dzorwulu, Frimpong, Blankson and Sakyi collected the utensils and deposited them at Dansoman where they then shared them.

It also revealed that Frimpong gave his share to his wife Ama Nyarko to sell. An enquiry at the Registrar-General's Department indicated the company of the accused persons did not exist.
