Court jails unemployed for stealing

Ejisu (Ash), Feb 5, GNA - A 26-year-old unemployed who resides in Kumasi, was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment in hard labour for stealing.

Akwasi Owusu pleaded guilty to the charge.

Police Inspector Nkansah Twumasi-Ankrah told the court, presided over by Mr Noble Nkrumah that on January 18, 2005, Police Lance-corporal Victoria Mensah was on duty at Ejisu when she saw Owusu carrying six fowls.

He said the policewoman therefore, ordered him to stop but he refused and took to his heels and was given a chase and arrested. Inspector Twumasi-Ankrah said when he was taken to the police station, he told the police that he boarded a vehicle to Ayigya but slept and the vehicle brought him to Besease where he spent the night. He said this explanation, however, did not go down well with the police and so he was charged with the offence.
