Court jails driver for robbery

An Accra circuit court on Tuesday sentenced Reynold Blay, a driver, and one Kwasi Twumasi Ankrah, to a total of 45 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

The convicts would serve 20 years for conspiracy and 20 and 25 years each for robbery, on their own plea. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Ankrah told the court that they were able to commit the crime without being caught by the police, after which they share the booty.

Chief Superintendent of Police Duuti Tuaraka told the court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri that, sometime last year, the convicts chartered a taxi at Kwame Nkrumah Circle at about 2100 hours to Trantra Hill, a suburb of Accra, when the incident happened.

He said on reaching the destination, the convicts threatened the driver with knives and snatched the cab.

The prosecution said upon a tip off, the police arrested Blay on November 14, 2013, who hails from Asakae-Ahanta in the Western Region.

During investigations, the suspect confessed to the offence and stated that he and Ankrah drove the cab to Asamankese where they sold it for GH?2,000.

Chief Superintendent Duuti said on November 11, 2013 the police in the company of Blay proceeded to Asamankese where one Abu Mohammed from Tamale was identified as the one who bought the taxi.

He said after the incident, Ankrah was also arrested as the accomplice of Blay.
