Court jails driver 10 years for possessing marijuana

Juaso (Ash), Aug 24, GNA - A 22-year-old driver, Abdulai Mohammed, has been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in hard labour by the Juaso Circuit Court for possessing 66 wrappers of Indian hemp. He pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Isaac Dompreh, prosecuting, told the court, presided over by Mr Jacob Boon, that the complainant was the unit committee chairman at Bomfa while the accused was a driver and resident of Nobewam near Konongo. He said on April 4, this year, the complainant smelt marijuana on Mohammed while passing by him.

ASP Dompreh said the complainant became suspicious and called two other witnesses to assist him confront the accused, who was holding a small bag and challenged him to open it, but he refused. They arrested and took him to the Bomfa palace where the bag was opened and 58 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana were found.

The prosecution said Nana Yiadom II, Chief of Bomfa, ordered that the accused be taken to the police station, where eight more wrappers were found on him after a further search. According to the prosecutor, the exhibit was forwarded to Accra for testing and the results proved to be marijuana. 24 Aug. 07
