Court cases: EC is dabbling in triviality – Professor Kweku Asare

Constitutional Lawyer, Professor Stephen Kweku Asare is asking the Electoral Commission to focus on its core mandate, warning the electoral body may end up disenfranchising some voters with the numerous court cases. Professor Kweku Asare who spoke on 3FM’s Flagship Sunrise Morning Show today, was reacting to the EC’s decision to seek a review from the Apex Court.

“The EC shod focus on her job, her core mandate is to organize elections, the issue of who to be on the ballot should be trivial. People have filed their packages, those with problems should be allowed to them to fix them and get ourselves ready for December 7.

“The EC’s job is not to give us a slate of candidate that it prefers; its job is to give us a slate of candidates who have come forward to put themselves on the ballot.

“If the Commissioner however persists on disqualifying certain candidates, she is technically disenfranchising voters because there are voters who want to vote for those she is trying to disqualify.

“But our laws are clear and strict; the Courts have held consistently that we must not disenfranchise voters.”

The Electoral Commission is in court battling at least five cases brought against it following its disqualification of some presidential aspirants for the 2016 elections.
