Couple remanded for assaulting Police officer

Accra, March 8, GNA - An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday remanded a couple, Anthony Kofi Mensah Djentun, a public officer and Maria O'Sullevan Djentun, an estate developer, in prison custody for allegedly assaulting a Police officer at post.

Mensah, 58, and O'Sullevan, 49, pleaded not guilty to offensive conduct, assault on public officer and deceit of public officer. They will appear again on March 15. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Edward Antwi told the tribunal chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah that on January 15, Mensah and his wife went to the Castle in search of their son and some workers, who were then being held for questioning in a case under investigation.

He said while at the Castle, the accused persons started to shout at the top of their voices. At this stage, the complainant, Lance-Corporal Stephen Tamakloe, who was on duty, approached them and told them to control themselves.

The prosecutor said the accused persons then started to rain insult on the Police officer. Chief Inspector Antwi said the couple suddenly attacked the complainant, with Mensah holding and twisting his neck, this brought some people to his rescue.

The Prosecutor said the accused persons then left the Castle and went to lodge a report at the Airport Police Station that their son was abducted and subsequently went to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation with an extract from the Police station to cause an announcement to be made.
