Kumasi, Dec. 30, GNA - Counting of votes in the assembly and
unit committee elections is underway in the Ashanti region, after 10
hours of voting in 20 out of the 27 administrative districts. Small groups of people were seen gathered at the polling centres
in the Kumasi metropolis observing the ballot count, when the
Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited those centres. The process is likely to go deep into the night, given the large
number of candidates, who contested the unit committee polls. At the Adum Presby JHS polling centre for example, as many as
21 candidates contested the unit committee election. The emerging picture from areas toured by the GNA shows an
incredibly low turn out. Just 182 voters out of the total registered number of 1,040 cast
their ballot at the close of polls at the Adum 91A-Life' polling centre,
while 58 out of 908 voted at the Railway Police Station, whilst at the
Royal Palm centre, 213 out of the total of 1,213 exercised their
franchise. At Adum JHS, 365 out of 1,290 registered voters showed up to
vote and at Oforikrom Volley Park, 337 voters out of 1,325 cast
their ballot. The situation was not different from the Oforikrom post office,
where out of the 1,201 registered voters only 142 voted.
