A Constable of the anti-armed robbery squad at the Criminal Investigations Department(CID)of the Ghana Police Service was shot dead at Doblo Gonno,a village near Amasaman, in the early hours of yesterday.

The constable, whose name is being withheld was among a group of nine policemen who were detailed from the CID headquarters to the village to effect the arrest of a murder suspect.

A civilian,Nicholas Oko Sai,who sustained gun shot wounds during the attack on the policemen,is on admission at the Police Hospital in Accra. His condition was said to be stable.

Two brothers,Lamptey Mills,28,and Lantei Mills,25,who were alleged to have shot the policeman and Sai have been arrested and are assisting the police in their investigations.

According to a police source, the homicide unit of the CID were investigating a murder case which occurred in 2003 at Achiaman, near Amasaman.

The source said the police had for the past two years mounted a search in order to effect the arrest of the suspect who absconded soon after committing the murder in 2003.

It said the police had information that he had resurfaced and was hiding at Doblo Gonno,so a team of policemen was detailed at dawn yesterday to effect his arrest.

The source said on reaching the village the policemen went into the family house of the suspect Lamtey Mills, and arrested him but he managed to escape to the house of Lantei which was about 30 kilometres away to inform him that some people had come to the village to arrest their father.

The source said Lantei then went into his room and picked a pump action gun.He accompanied Lantei back to their father?s house.

It said on their way they spotted one of the policemen standing with a civilian and consequently Lantei opened fire on them. The bullet hit the policeman on the chest while two of the pellets hit Nicholas in the ribs.

Sensing danger the two escaped from the scene by firing shots, and resurfaced at the Amasaman Police Station where they reported to the policemen on duty that they had been attacked by armed robbers in their village.

They were arrested and taken to the village where they were identified as those who had shot the policeman and the civilian.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
