Controversy Over Ex-Minister's Hospital Bills

Convicted Youth and Sports Minister, Mallam Yusif Isa had to fork out almost 2.5 million as medical expenses for his treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra, where he has been hospitalized for sometime now.

Hospital sources as well as friends of the Mallam Isa who helped to raise the funds to pay for his treatment say the medical expenses had to be settled before the treatment of Mallam Isa who was rushed to the hospital after he reportedly collapsed and injured himself at Nsawan Prisons.

He has since been operated on and is expected to be discharged soon.

The payment of his medical bills by some members of the Association of Muslim professionals has raised questions about the state’s commitment to its prisoners.

But although hospital authorities acknowledged that they took some money from the convicted prisoner, they said it could not be up to ?2.5 million.

The Director of Prisons, Richard Kuuire says although it is the duty of the Prisons service to cater for sick prisoners, Mallam Isa had to pay his own medical bills because the service lacked funds to cater for him.
