Construction work begins on Agona Swedru bridges

Agona Swedru, Aug 1, GNA - Work has begun on the construction of two bridges over the Akora River at Agona Swedru in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region.

The bridges were among three in the Municipality that were destroyed during a heavy downpour in the Agona area on June 20 this year.

Mr Offei Annor, Central Regional Engineer of the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA), made this known to the press at the project site.

Mr Annor said the basement of the old bridge would be maintained as recommended by experts.

Meanwhile the Swedruman Council of Chiefs have registered their protest against the maintenance of the basement of the old bridge, calling for a new one to be built to prolong the life span of the bridge.

The chiefs registered their protest when Mr Anno in the company of other officials including the Municipal Coordinator Director of the Agona West Municipal Assembly, Matthew Quayeson, and some pressmen went to the Palace of Nana Kobina Botwe II, to officially inform the chiefs of the construction of the bridges.

The chiefs said if the new one was not constructed, they would demonstrate.

The project manager, Mr Azu, told the press latter that the project was being undertaking through pre-financing and it was expected to be completed in two month.

According to him the contractor wanted to complete the project early in order to restore social life and commercial activities that had been badly affected as a result of the collapsed of the two bridges.

Mr Azu said a concrete bridge would be built on the bye-pass road on completion of the main bridge, to fully restore commercial activities in the Municipality.
