Construction of Tema Intersection set to begin

Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the Minister of Roads and Highways, has said all is set for work to begin on the $60 million Tema Intersection.

He said Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to cut sod for the stated project on Wednesday July 18.

Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the Minister of Roads and Highways, said this on Thursday when he led officials and engineers from his Ministry, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, the Ghana Highways Authority, Urban Roads Department and Feeder Roads to inspect various roads in the Greater Accra Region.

The tour took them to Tema Community 9, Community 10 and Community 12.
He said the sod-cutting ceremony would make way for the construction for a three-tier interchange at the Tema Motorway Roundabout which is funded by a Japanese government grant through JICA.

The first phase of the project would involve the construction of an underpass and a signalised grade intersection and is expected to be completed within 28 months.

The project is being implemented by the Ghana Highways Authority through the Ministry of Roads and Highways with CTI Engineering International Company Limited as the consultant.

The Roads Minister signed the contract for the project on December 15, 2017, with Shimizu-Dai Nippon JV, the contractor.

The Minister during the inspection interacted with residents in the area who highlighted the difficulties they experienced in using the roads.

Mr Amoako-Atta called on squatters around the Tema Motorway Roundabout to evacuate and move their various structures for the construction to commence.

“I want to put it on record that after July 18 when sod is officially cut here, if they (squatters) still continue to defy advice and be adamant we will invoke the state powers. This is a national project and no individual or sectional interest will be put above it,” the minister warned.
