Confusion rocks Zoomlion over unpaid salaries

Workers of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a waste management company and subsidiary of Jospong Group of Companies, are going hungry as confusion grows over who is responsible for the continued non-payment of their wages and benefits.

As a result, they have threatened to lay down their tools, if management does not pay them their accumulated salaries by the end of this month.

According to the aggrieved workers, numbering over ten thousand, they have not been paid a dime of their meager GHC100 salary for the past 15 months.

The workers’ anger at the delay in payment, asempanews.com understands, has been made more acute by the company’s vast expenditure on sponsoring state and private events.

Explaining their dire situation to asempanews.com, one of the workers who spoke on condition of anonymity said they had to depend on loans for rents and payment of other necessities.

The source, however, added that if they don’t receive assurance or commitments from management, they will be forced to picket at the company’s head office or stage a series of demonstrations to drum home their demands.

“As a team leader, I receive just GHC120 monthly, but a dime has not hit my account for the past 15 months and the situation is making life unbearable for all of us. We have made several complaints to our supervisors, but to no avail,” one of the workers furiously stated.

Reports corroborated by elements within the top echelons of the company indicate that the affected workers have been warned by management not to go public on the matter or risk outright dismissal.

“Aside from the constant excuses for the delay, we have been warned not to speak to anyone on the matter or face dismissal, so we are in a very difficult situation,” our source added.
