Commercial transport operators have threatened to stage a protest over the poor state of the Pokuase–Nsawam section of the N4 Highway, which connects Accra to Kumasi.

In a joint statement issued on August 14, 2025, by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, the True Drivers Union, and other commercial transport operators, the unions said the deplorable condition of the road poses extreme dangers to motorists, commuters, and other road users along the stretch.

“As commercial transport operators, we are grappling with high operational costs due to the bad nature of the road, which requires frequent maintenance and replacement of spare parts. This is in addition to the damage caused to our vehicles and their shortened lifespan,” the statement noted.

The drivers said the unions had previously engaged the Minister for Roads and Highways, who assured them the road would be fixed within six weeks.

“In a recent engagement with the Minister for Roads and Highways, we were assured that the situation would be remedied within six weeks and that the road would be put in a satisfactory condition for ease of movement. However, the timeline has elapsed, and to our chagrin, the situation remains the same.

“If no meaningful action is taken within one week, the GPRTU of TUC, GRTCC, and other commercial transport operators will park our vehicles and embark on a protest against the government until our concerns are addressed,” the statement added.
